Transitioning Your Dog to a New Food

Step 1: Switch the food first, before changing the number of meals.

How to Switch to a New Food (Extended 2-Week Transition):

  • Day 1–3: 75% old food, 25% new food

  • Day 4–6: 50% old food, 50% new food

  • Day 7–9: 25% old food, 75% new food

  • Day 10–14: 100% new food

Tip: If your dog develops soft stool or an upset stomach, repeat the previous step for a few extra days before moving forward, and add a probiotic.

Special Note for Puppies:

For a 6-month-old puppy transitioning to adult food, follow the same schedule. Most medium to large breeds can begin adult food around 6 months; small breeds may wait until 12 months. Confirm with your vet based on your puppy’s breed and growth.

Step 2: Switch From 3 Meals to 2 Meals a Day

Once your dog is fully settled on the new food (usually after 2 weeks), you can adjust meal frequency.

How to Switch Meals:

  • Start by slightly increasing breakfast and dinner portions.

  • Gradually reduce the midday meal over 5–7 days:

    • Days 1–2: Cut midday meal in half.

    • Days 3–4: Offer just a small snack (like a few kibble pieces).

    • Day 5+: Eliminate the midday meal.

Tip: This keeps calories balanced while easing your dog into the new routine.
