When it comes to teaching our dogs how to live peacefully in our human world, rewards are one of the most powerful tools we have. They help shape behavior, build strong bonds, and motivate our dogs to learn and repeat the things we like. At Willow Creek Dog Training, we believe reward-based training is not just effective—it’s essential.
Why Rewards Work
Dogs learn through association. When a behavior is followed by something the dog enjoys, the dog is more likely to repeat that behavior.
Rewards increase motivation, build trust, and reduce fear or confusion.
High-Value Rewards for Big Moments
When teaching a new behavior or working through a difficult situation—like recall around distractions or calm behavior near other dogs—we use high-value rewards. These are things your dog absolutely loves:
• Baked or boiled chicken
• Freeze-dried salmon
• Freeze-dried liver
These special treats grab your dog’s full attention and keep them eager to learn. High-value rewards are your dog’s paycheck for doing a tough job, and they help your dog feel successful in even the most challenging training moments.
Varying Rewards as Your Dog Grows
As your dog matures and becomes more fluent in behaviors, we begin to vary the type of reward. This helps maintain interest and builds reliability. Your dog may earn:
• Verbal praise (“Yes! Good dog!”)
• Affectionate petting
• Tug or fetch with a favorite toy
• Lower-value treats (like kibble)
This doesn’t mean we stop using high-value rewards—it just means we learn to balance them based on the task and situation.
Why We Never “Phase Out” Rewards Completely
One of the biggest mistakes dog owners make is thinking that once their dog knows a command, they no longer need rewards. But rewards don’t just teach behavior—they maintain it.
Would you keep showing up to work if your paycheck stopped? Your dog feels the same. Even if you don’t use food every time, rewards should always be part of your dog’s life. They remind your dog that working with you is fun and worthwhile.
Training Is a Lifelong Conversation
Training doesn’t end after puppyhood—it’s an ongoing conversation between you and your dog. Using rewards keeps that conversation positive and productive. It builds a dog who wants to listen, who loves learning, and who trusts you deeply.
At Willow Creek Dog Training, we don’t bribe—we motivate. We don’t fade rewards—we evolve them. And we never stop showing our dogs that they’re doing a great job.
